My sister Lou was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2020. Added to the shock of the diagnosis, we couldn’t travel to see Lou as she was living in Brisbane and due to Covid, there were strict travel restrictions and we did not qualify to travel interstate. We also didn’t know much about this insidious cancer or how rapidly it can take someone’s life and sadly, Lou passed away just 9 weeks later on 5 September, 202 at 57 years. We have since learnt just how devastating pancreatic cancer is, with so few people living more than one year from diagnosis.
Lou was so many things to so many people- a much-loved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunty, friend and teacher to 20 prep children. Lou was a highly valued teacher and took pride in her job which was really her vocation. Her motto was ‘they may not remember what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel”.
Lou was my big sister, my first best friend- the girl I got to share a bedroom with and all our hopes and dreams for the future. Lou did life so well- she was funny, authentic, content and such a lifeforce who just embraced being alive.
On the day Lou died I read a sign on a shop window which has now become my mantra…’At the end of the day all you need is hope and strength. Hope that things will get better and strength to hold on until it does.’ My hope is that in the future and through the work of Dare to Hope, there will be far better outcomes for those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Together, we will inspire HOPE.
This page is dedicated to honouring someone dear to me who has been affected by pancreatic cancer.
To pay tribute to them, I am raising funds for this critically underfunded and overlooked disease. I proudly support Dare to Hope, a volunteer-led charity committed to changing outcomes for those impacted by pancreatic cancer by funding vital medical research.
Medical research is the key to achieving breakthroughs in treatment and improving survival rates. Your support can help bring HOPE to those facing this devastating disease.
Please donate today to honor our special person and make a difference. Dare to Hope is a registered charity with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. Donations over $2 are tax deductible in Australia. You will be emailed a tax receipt.
The more people who learn about their story and the work of Dare to Hope, the greater the impact. Please share this page with family, friends, and colleagues to spread HOPE to more Australians.
